The differences between these plate heat exchangers are following:
Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers (BPHEs):
- Plates are sealed by brazing with copper or nickel
- Permanent bond, cannot be disassembled for cleaning or repair
- Higher temperature and pressure limits
- More compact and lightweight
- Lower leak risk
- Typically lower initial cost
Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (GPHEs):
- Plates are sealed with gaskets
- Can be opened for cleaning, repair, or replacement of plates and gaskets
- Limited by gasket material's temperature and pressure tolerance
- Larger and heavier than BPHEs
- Slightly higher leak risk due to potential gasket failure
- May have higher upfront cost but can be more economical long-term if frequent maintenance is required
