The differences between these plate heat exchangers are following:

Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers (BPHEs):

  • Plates are sealed by brazing with copper or nickel
  • Permanent bond, cannot be disassembled for cleaning or repair
  • Higher temperature and pressure limits
  • More compact and lightweight
  • Lower leak risk
  • Typically lower initial cost

Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (GPHEs):

  • Plates are sealed with gaskets
  • Can be opened for cleaning, repair, or replacement of plates and gaskets
  • Limited by gasket material's temperature and pressure tolerance
  • Larger and heavier than BPHEs
  • Slightly higher leak risk due to potential gasket failure
  • May have higher upfront cost but can be more economical long-term if frequent maintenance is required
